Independent Market Animal Junior Livestock Exhibitor Local Rules

To show and sell at the Colusa County Fair an Independent Junior Exhibitor must register with the Colusa Fair Entry Office by November 30th of each year.  If this date falls on a weekend, it is by the Friday before.

At this time you must list:

  1. Project or Species
  2. Name of the Adult that will be supervising you while on the Fairgrounds.
  3. Parent/Guardian must sign the registration at this time.

Exhibitor Age and Other Requirements:

1. Limited to Colusa County Residents only
2. Must be 9 years old or in the 4th grade by January 1, of each calendar year.
3. Exhibitors are eligible to compete through December 31st of the year in which they turn 19.
4. Must not be affiliated with any Junior Organization (4-H or FFA) within 60 days (120 days for market beef) before the Fair in the same livestock project (species).
5. Must provide certificate of Liability Insurance coverage for themselves as required by local and State Rules. (May purchase through Fair Office)
6. Must attend scheduled pre-weigh-in day or receive written permission to be excused. If not attending the weigh-in day, exhibitors must submit a picture of themselves and their animal subject to the same rules as outlined for all Livestock exhibitors. Additionally, all independent market animals must be tagged by a Fair representative.
7. Must make a project presentation to the Fair Board of Directors during the months of March, April or May. All presentations will be graded/scored by the Fair Board of Directors, or designees. Presentations must be a minimum of 5 minutes in duration. Exhibitor must receive a score of 70% or higher in order to be eligible. Presentations will be scheduled by the Colusa County Fair Management.
8. Keep a Record Book (provided by the fair) that must be turned into the Fair Livestock Office by 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, of fair week. To be reviewed by a Fair Board member and a JLA Committee Representative.
9. A Thank You note MUST be written to the buyer and turned into the Livestock Office in an addressed, stamped envelope after the awards ceremony on Sunday. Exhibitor checks will not be issued until a thank you note is received.
10. Independent Exhibitors shall show in age appropriate division as per their age/year in school as of January 1, of each calendar year.
8th Grade/13 or under 4-H
High School/14 or over FFA

11. Independent exhibitors may only compete one year after graduating from high school, provided they were entered as an independent in the previous year.
12. Please note that members transferring from 4-H, FFA or Grange to Independent may be ineligible to participate at Fairs as an Independent exhibitor if documented disciplinary action involving their project(s) has been taken against them by 4-H, FFA or Grange organizations. Length of ineligibility shall be determined by Fair Management.
13. Independent Exhibitors are required to check in with the Livestock Superintendent at the Livestock Office daily (starting the day after the animal is moved onto the Fairgrounds) at three separate times: 8:00am, 12:00pm and 6:00pm. Exhibitors and Superintendent will do three walk through’s per day to inspect pens for cleanliness and confirm water and feed have been provided to each animal.
14. If the Exhibitor fails to meet any of the above listed rules, they will NOT be eligible to show as an Independent Exhibitor for the following year.
